I went to school evenings starting in 1995 for a degree in Graphic Design at the Art Institute of Atlanta. Click here for a description of my courses and my projects.
During my education, I worked part-time on design contracts. Starting in the Summer of 1996, I went to school full-time, and continued freelancing. I graduated with Honors in June, 1997.
My objective was to cement my knowledge of layout, illustration, color harmony, typography, and design theory and practice. Over my years of technical communication, I had to make visual decisions that I didn't feel qualified to do. That time is over.
During my courses and contract work, I learned Web design (a carryover from my days hard-coding GML in Bookmaster), rotoscoping for animation sequences, and the finer points of photo manipulation. I designed packaging, advertising and exhibit materials, telephone credit cards, and retail mailers for a major department store chain. I worked on a team translating technically-challenging information on watershed damage into direct mail and instructional aids.
I still freelance and have maintainted this entry to emphasize my technical and graphic arts skills as an adjunct to my technical writing experience. I also work in physical media, such as custom motorcycle painting using urethane paints on metal.
